In North Rhine Westphalia (NRW), there are rules about what you can and cannot do on Good Friday. It is considered a “stiller Feiertag”, meaning a holiday calling for quiet and reflection. Christians commemorate on this day the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death. Anything loud on this somber day is basically forbidden.

If you had plans for a big party with pumped up music, you will need to change the date. Loud music, parties, dancing and even outdoor sports which raise the volume are not allowed, even if they are private. The rules extend from Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. until Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. Offenders can be given a warning fine for noise violations.

On Good Friday and Easter Sunday, bakeries and flower shops are allowed to be open for a total of five hours. Young people have criticized the limitations, especially with regard to dancing; the state of Baden-Württemberg had to relax its rules last year. In 13 other states however, the rules are similar to those in NRW.
