The fire brigade Bonn rescued a dog from the island in the Rheinauen pond on Friday afternoon. „Bella“ was chasing a coypu, onto the frozen pond, but the ice unfortunately didn’t hold her weight.Crossbreed bitch „Bella“ ran away from her owner during her walk, apparently chasing a coypu, but not stopping at the shore area and then running out on the frozen surface of the Rheinauen pond.

Due to the continuous minus temperatures at night the pond is mostly covered by ice, yet „Bella’s“ weight, including her muzzle, proved too much. The dog broke through the ice, but managed to make it through the ice-cold water to the nearby island. Returning to the safe shore where her owner was beginning to panic seemed impossible to her.

The female owner called the fire brigade. The rescue team arrived at 3.40 pm, and brought a rubber boat, in which they brought the dog owner onto the pond. A fireman paddled over to the island, „Bella“ jumped into the boat, where the owner greeted her happily. The rest of the event was a mere formality. Around 4.30pm, „Bella“ and her owner were returned to the safe shore. What happened to the coypu is not known.
