Deadly carnival accident 18-year-old caught under tram in Brühl

Brühl · A tragic accident claimed the life of an 18-year-old on the first major carnival day of the season. The young man got caught under a tram in Brühl and was killed.

An 18-year-old from Weilerswist was killed on Thursday evening in a tragic accident on the first day of carnival festivities, Weiberfastnacht (Women’s Carnival Day). In the town of Brühl, which is about halfway between Bonn and Cologne, he was run over by a tram from the Line 18. According to police, the accident occurred at around 6pm at the Brühl-North stop.

The tram had been heading to Cologne. For reasons that remain unknown, the young man was in between two of the tram cars. The tram conductor did not notice the incident initially and drove on, according to the Brühl fire department. He was informed later about the accident. Several people who witnessed the accident were taken care of and provided with counseling at the scene.

According to police, there is no evidence of foul play. A spokeswoman said they were assuming it was an accident. Tram Line 18 ran on a limited basis in the following hour and a half. The route was re-opened around 7:30 pm.
