As the locals say “Jeck, jecker, Karneval”: the Bonn street parades traditionally begin with the ghost parade (Geister-Zoch) in Graurheindorf organised by the Karnevalsclub ‘Rhingdorfer Junge un Mädche’. There has been a procession like this since 2005. Its origin is actually based on a misunderstanding: a friendly carnival band was supposed to march through the area but they cancelled at the last minute.

There were persistent rumours of a ghost procession. Some members of the Karnevalsclub spontaneously decided to get together in costume and set up a procession. This has since become a cherished tradition which is said to put off any bad weather to the next day. The usual carnival procession takes place afterwards.

The ghost parade in Graurheindorf begins at Margarethenplatz on Friday17th Febraury at 7pm. Participants are requested to come dressed as ghosts and spirits.

The next day (18th February) there are carnival processions in Alt-Tannenbusch and Kessenich. And on Sunday 19 February in Ippendorf.

Next weekend is the main carnival weekend with processions in the following areas:

In Dransdorf on Saturday 25th February and in Endenich on Sunday 26th February. At lunchtime there is a carnival parade through Poppelsdorf.

The main highlight is the huge procession in the centre of Bonn on Carnival Monday (Rosenmontag). The procession starts at 12 noon in Thomas-Mann-Straße. This year’s theme is "Bonn met Hätz" (Bonn mit Herz). Information on all the parades in Bonn can be found in our online calender.
