The river’s waters are rising for days now. But what happens at which river level according to the emergency plans in place for flooding situations? Here’s some information on the different stages, important for the city of Bonn and the water and river traffic authorities.

5 meters: „Minor Flooding“.

5,50 - 5,60 meters: The ferry between Graurheindorf and Mondorf ceases its service.

6 meters: Flooding level I. Ships are only allowed to go slowly and in the middle of the river.

7 meters: In Beuel, the slip roads towards the Rhine get closed and jettys are prepared. The civilians are informed by loudspeaker announcements.

7.15 meters: The ferry stops Bad Godesberg and Bad Godesberg Rheinufer are not used anymore.

7.20 meters: The slip roads to the Rhine from Legionsweg all the way to the Schaumburg-Lippe-Straße are closed.

7.40 meters: „Medium Flooding". The fire brigade calls in an emergency team.

7.50 meters: The Technical Command Headquarters in Beuel gets activated - and the first sand bags walls are erected.

7.60 meters: The ferry Mehlem-Königswinter ceases its service.

7.90 meters: The ferry Dollendorf-Bad Godesberg ceases its service.

8 meters: Flooding level II. The ship traffic ceases. The river rises over its banks at a level of a bit more than eight meters. The Rheinaustraße south of the Kennedy-Bridge as well as the Steinerstraße and the Johannesstraße get flooded first. North of the Kennedy-Bridge the Rheinaue is protected by a dam at the Wolfsgasse up to a level of 9.50 meters. The Charels-de-Gaulle-Straße in Bonn is closed downriver from the Hermann-Ehlers-Straße.

8.10 meters: Flood jetties are built in Beuel and boats are provided for residents of the Rheinaustraße.

8.20 meters: „Major Flooding". In Bad Godesberg and Bonn Technical Command Headquarters is installed. Jetties will be erected at the Rheinstraße.

8.50 meters: In Graurheindorf a emergency headquarter is installed. Water will reach the Mertensgasse. In the city centre of Bonn, the river promenade gets flooded near the Alte Zoll.

8.60 meters: Mehlen will reach a critical stage. The water will reach Rüdigerstraße near Am Glückshaus.

9.50 meters: In Mondorf the Rheinallee gets flooded, the cellars will run full of water. Approxiamtely 100 residents get affected.

10.13 meters: Highest water level during the „Century Flooding“ in 1993.
