„Strikingly discreet“: The theme requirements of make-up and hair-dos which the students of the college had to create for the models in a fashion show as part of the „Wednesday Late Art“ project in the Bundeskunsthalle could not sound more paradox.

But for aspiring make-up artists this should be an everyday task. Nothing too extravagant, yet an eye-catcher - and of course always matching the outfits which were designed by students of the Mediadesign Highschool Düsseldorf.

Both institutions had planned the evening together and combined the strengths of each faculty. A win-win cooperation, as RWB director Birgit Hufnagel pointed out. „For the young designers it is great to be able to present their creations to the public, and for our students it is great to get a chance to show what they learned, under realistic conditions.“

The latter proved to be the biggest challenge, said the students, who are coming to the end of their three-year, dual apprenticeship. „We don’t have much space in the changing rooms and no perfect light conditions“, explained one of them. „And we have to work unter time pressure.“ 20 to 30 minutes per model sounds generous at first, even if a dozen of models need to be looked after this evening. „But there is a lot more to it than you can actually see“, explains teacher Beatrix Wolter.

„We already met up during the afternoon and saw the models and their outfits for the first time. After the coordinating process we did not have much time for the actual make-up and hair-dos, especially because every student had to do several models“, explained Wolter. The task proved to be a test, which all of those involved passed with flying colours.

The young ladies on the improvised, semicircular runway looked stunning, make-up and hair-styles did not look too domineering - and yet rounded up the look of the collections cleverly.

The fashion designs with the theme „sustainability“ covered a wide range of styles; some were slim fit, figure-hugging, others sported a more leisurely look - for everyday use or festive events. Some even appeared to be leaning towards an haute couture style.

The audience was impressed, and only disappointed that the show was over after a mere ten minutes. Everybody would have loved to see more - maybe next time. „I hope very much that we can repeat this cooperation“, Hufnagel said also.
