Current river levels and outlook Threat of Rhine levels rising further in Bonn

Bonn · The level of the Rhine in Bonn and Cologne steadied on Tuesday morning but risks rising again in the next few days. Königswinter is already on alert.

After the floods at the start of the year, the river level is rising again in Bonn and Cologne. The river stood at 6.87 metres in Bonn on Monday morning. Even if the water remains steady at around 6.80 metres on Tuesday morning, it is expected to continue to rise in the coming days.

Access roads to the Rhine in Beuel are closed when the level is 7 metres and the Bad Godesberg ferry is cancelled and the Bad Godesberg Rhine bank closed at 7.15 metres. The Graurheindorf-Mondorf ferry has already stopped operating.

Königswinter is on alert

“We are on alert,” said Nico Graefe, spokesman for the town of Königswinter. The level of water in Andernach, which is significant for Königswinter, was already at 6.73 metres again on Monday lunchtime. When the level is 6.77 metres, the footpath on the Rhine promenade floods. Rheinallee has to be closed at 7 metres and the tramline 66 can no longer run to Bad Honnef. In this case, alternative bus transport will again be provided from the Clemens-August-Straße bus stop.

However, it may not come to that this time. The flood warning service in Rhineland-Pfalz predicted rising water levels for Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the range for Tuesday (6.52 to 6.87 metres) and for Wednesday (6.61 to 7.20 metres) is very wide. “Our peak lies between these values,” said Graefe. Rheinallee will be closed as required and “as little as possible.”

Only two weeks ago, the Rhine level at Andernach reached its highest level for many years at 8.32 metres.

Level in Cologne steadying

The level of the Rhine in Cologne steadied on Tuesday morning at around 7.2 metres. A spokesperson for the flood control centre there said in the morning that not much would change during the day. However, the water level on the Upper Rhine was already rising again. It is expected to have an effect on the level in Cologne on Wednesday. The current level is not affecting shipping.
