Strange sky over Meckenheim Ring mystery is solved

Meckenheim · It was the big topic Monday evening - what caused the black ring up in the sky? After much speculation, the answer was found.

Many people observed a black smoky ring in the sky above Meckenheim on Monday evening. There was much speculation about what caused the ring - was it creatures from outer space? Was it the weather? No and no. The ring appeared at around 7:45 p.m. and dissipated after about ten minutes.

Nearby, there was an apartment on fire but that was not the cause either. On the General Anzeiger Facebook page, readers speculated that it was a swarm of birds or mini-drones. The conspiracy theory “chemtrails” was also mentioned several times; it’s a suspicion that chemicals or biological agents are deliberately left by aircraft to harm the public.

The correct answer came from the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), the German Federal Criminal Police Bureau. Spokeswoman Sandra Clemens answered a GA inquiry, saying it was caused by a technical trial of the BKA in Meckenheim in which they created a self-induced harmless smoke.

In their attempt to simulate damage, an electric lighter was lit on the ground. Powder was ignited and then produced an explosion which rose up in the air. Clemens said, “Normally it would develop into a cloud of smoke.” The ring formation was unusual and “a pure coincidence.” (Orig. text: Alexander Hertel)
