Turning circle in Bad Godesberg Nearly completed roundabout is torn out

Rüngsdorf · It was nearly finished but the new turning circle at Römerplatz had to be demolished and rebuilt. Corrective work means project completion is set back a couple weeks.

A new chapter has been added to the building of the roundabout at Römerplatz:the nearly completed turning circle border was torn apart again - in need of some reconstruction. The gray and white border stones, which had been set into place, were taken out and relaid.

The city said the correction had nothing to do with reports that the turning circle looked slanted and added that it would still appear tilted even after the corrections had been made. It is the orientation of the terrain that is faulted for causing the problem. The roads that go to the Rhine are one meter lower than the ones on the opposite side. If one were to build a circle that is optically straight, “one would have to raise the streets by several meters,” said the city press office.

So what was the problem with the newly laid turning circle? The height of the inner surface of the roundabout was not properly aligned with the other areas. This means that the interior had to be renewed - at the cost of the construction company, not the city.

Because of the corrective work, the completion date for the project has been set back a couple weeks but there is still some time to catch up. Initially, the work was expected to be finished in June. The roundabout, when finished, will connect Ubier-, Rhein-, Konstantin-, Karl-Finkelnburg- and Rüngsdorfer Straße.
