Königswinterstrasse in Beuel Construction sites causing obstruction

Beuel · An obstacle course on Königswinter Straße: several large construction sites on the main road between the Südbrücke and Siegburger Straße are forcing drivers to take a zig-zag route.

The traffic lanes make a detour in several places and the traffic is directed through narrow road sections, like for example at the Finkenberg in Limperich. A few cables, washed concrete slabs and weather beaten remains of an external staircase – little remanence of the building that stood for decades on the site at number 227. In its place, the ground is churned up and a fallen tree stump lies across the site. The old concrete wall separating the land from the edge of the road has not been touched by the works. The heavy machinery entered the site through a small opening. This is where pedestrians are directed across a secure path along the road.

“Finally, we’re getting started” says Muhametali Hanci, owner of the Troisdorf company Mo-Bauprojekt, who has been waiting for some time for the starting signal. He had wanted to begin the demolition and excavation last winter. But we changed the building plans and improved the external appearance,” he explains.

One reason for this was the old basalt stone wall which came to light following the demolition. Neighbours informed the Federal Office for Ground Monument Conservation. “It turned out to be an old retaining wall for wine making,” explains Uwe Steinkrüger. “It is definitely a piece of the cultural landscape that should be preserved”. The Office informed the city council. “The wall will be kept subject to structural investigation”, ensured Marc Hoffmann from the press office. Therefore, the building plans had to be adapted. “The old wall will now be integrated into the construction”, he added.

The diggers should be rolling in any day now. In mid-2018 the first removal vans should be arriving”, promises investor Hanci. On the 1035 square meter site, an apartment building with 980 square meters of living space will be constructed. The building will contain eight freehold apartments and two penthouse apartments on four levels. “We will now push on with the ground work and pipe installation so that we are up to the interior construction by winter. Then the weather will not hold us up, says Hanci.

Only a few hundred meters in the direction of the centre there is more to look at. Here next to the plot of land at 125, a modern apartment building has been built in the past few months. And here it is also tight for the traffic. Car and bus drivers must past a further obstacle next to building number 374. Here, opposite the junction at Samansstraße there is a large construction site. The basement level of the new building is already complete. So that pedestrians can safely pass this area, the path has been separated from the road. Here an apartment building with freehold apartments is also being built. If the construction work continues as planned, the first residents will be moving in next year. (Orig. text: Gabriele Immenkeppel)
