NRW schools 38,000 more students

Düsseldorf · NRW prepares for an increase of students, mainly due to the increased refugee population.

The state government of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW) expects many more students to fill schools in the coming year. They attribute the growth to the large number of refugee children and youth. Around 38,000 extra students are planned for the 2016/2017 school year, out of a total of 2.24 million students.

As far as apprenticeships, the estimated number required for 2016 was raised to 3,450 and this is expected to also be sufficient in the coming year. Officials say the big increase in students is due to immigration, far and foremost the refugee population. An extra 584 million euro has been budgeted to cover the extra personnel and material costs for the instruction and integration of the immigrant students.
