Banquets and celebrations all year round Two new pavilions at the Rhine promenade in Bad Godesberg

BAD GODESBERG · Two new pavilions, one at the Bastei and one at the Hotel Dreesen, will give customers a greater choice when looking for a venue on the Rhine. Both are expected to be open year round in the future.

Many people who have passed by the Bastei in recent days have stopped to ask Martin Stützer, who operates the restaurant, what’s up with the new pavilion on the beer garden terrace. At the moment, a so-called “flying pavilion” is being built there, so they can use the space on the terrace all year long. "In concrete terms, this means that the new pavilion can be set up and dismantled within a few days," explains Stützer.

Pizza oven from Italy

He had the idea at the beginning of the year, and consulted with the historical preservation authorities about what could be built there. The result is a structure made of glass and wood, with a diameter of nine meters. This part will offer seating for 40 people in the future. Plans also include a bar counter, and a pizza oven, “a classic from Italy,” says Stützer.

The Bastei boss has hired a pizza baker, who will soon be making classic Neapolitan pizzas in that oven. Besides the pizza, the rest of the fare offered in the pavilion will include pasta and salads, leaning towards Mediterranean-Italian cuisine. He says it won’t be a big menu that is offered there, but rather some standard dishes. He expects the opening of the pavilion and terrace at the end of August, beginning of September, with seating for around 110 persons altogether.

Another all-year venue on the Rhine

Stützer was motivated to build the extension because he was tired of being dependent on the weather. Besides that, until a few years ago he experienced damage to the outside tent because of vandalism. He says this has significantly improved due to regular police inspections at Panorama Park. Stützer said he has already taken some bookings for the new space, one of them for a Christmas party.

Meanwhile, further to the south, neighbor Olaf Dreesen is also offering a new pavilion at the Hotel Dreesen on the Rhine. The glass extension offers space for 50 to 200 persons. Dreesen says it is not a restaurant, however, rather it is a venue for meetings and conferences.

Dreesen is also banking on a year-round business with the pavilion. "Many inquiries are already coming in. Our main concern was to preserve the chestnut garden without a glass cover, but also to use it year-round." Dreesen already expects numerous conferences in the pavilion this autumn.
