Bonn · The Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) is a government authority that is supposed to protect the state from security gaps in information technology and educate people about them. Due to the ongoing corona crisis, however, they are currently using their technical equipment to help in other ways.
Because of the corona crisis, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is using its 3D printer and laser cutter to produce individual parts for "Prusa Face Shield RC3" face masks, which are currently urgently needed in clinics and hospitals. With its existing technical equipment, BSI is able to cut out around 400 face shields from a special foil and produce around 20 corresponding headgears per week using 3D printing. The individual parts are assembled into finished face masks as part of the "Maker Versus Virus" initiative and distributed to doctors' practices, clinics and hospitals throughout Germany.
"Unfortunately, we cannot start mass production of face masks, but we can make a small contribution so that in the strained situation caused by the corona crisis, medical personnel can provide the help that sick people need so urgently right now," explains BSI President Arne Schönbohm.
The necessary design files for the 3D printer and the laser cutter were provided to BSI by the nationwide network "Maker Versus Virus”.
