Roads in the old town closed : City of Bonn shuts the cherry blossom for visitors from Wednesday

As too many people did not follow the city council's appeals and went to see the cherry blossom in Bonn's old town, the city closes off the access roads from Wednesday noon.

Since the end of last week, many people have visited the old town of Bonn - despite the appeals to obey the contact ban and keep the minimum distance. Now the city is drawing consequences.

"I very much regret that it has to come to this," says Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan. "I had very much hoped that our appeals would reach the people. Unfortunately, since the cherry blossom began at the end of last week, it has become apparent that the attraction of this natural spectacle is greater than the willingness to obey the contact ban and keep a distance. Therefore we must act in the sense of infection control."

At eight locations in the area of Heerstraße, Breite Straße, Kölnstraße and Maxstraße the city will erect barrier beacons. City employees will control access daily from Wednesday until the end of the cherry blossom. The residents of the streets, their visitors as well as crafts and service companies can pass the barriers.

Already on Tuesday afternoon, the public order office will be on the road with vehicles and will use loudspeaker announcements to ask visitors to leave the old town and keep a sufficient distance. The city's public order service and police will increase their presence as early as Tuesday.
