Although the government gave Bonn a temporary reprieve from taking in more refugees until after Easter, it has now become clear that Bonn will still need to find housing for 340 refugees during this period. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has announced it will open a branch for processing asylum seekers at the former Ermekeil military barracks in Bonn. For that to happen, “Haus 6” which currently holds 340 refugees, will have to be emptied out and converted into office space.

Officials say “Haus 6” will need to be available to BAMF by the end of February. It will then be converted to a center for processing the refugees who seek asylum in Germany, addressing the shortage of processing facilities and workers. City spokesperson Monika Hörig said the refugees will be moved to the sports halls of Robert-Wezlar and Heinrich-Hertz vocational colleges, and the Poliklinik on Wilhelmstraße.
