Drivers who happened to be travelling on the A59 Thursday at midday might have experienced significant delays. A rear-end collision caused the A59 to be closed off for half an hour in the direction of Cologne, at the Hangelar/Vilich exit. A long traffic jam all the way to Königswinter was the result.

According to police, a 63-year-old driver didn’t see a 26-year-old driver changing from the middle to the left lane because he was in the driver’s blind spot. Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were taken in an ambulance to a nearby hospital to be examined.

Tow trucks were called to the scene to haul away both vehicles, which were heavily damaged. The accident occurred at 11:35 a.m. and the autobahn was closed off for traffic heading towards Cologne until 12:17 p.m. The accident area was completely cleared by 1:00 p.m.
