Refugee shelters More and more refugees leave Bonn

BONN · The crisis mode is over as the number of refugees in Bonn slowly decreases. Four mobile container projects will offer living space for 900 people.

At the beginning of the year, the City of Bonn offered shelter to around 3,000 refugees. The number continues to decrease because no new refugees have been assigned to Bonn and asylum seekers continue to leave Bonn. At the end of December, hotels which had been rented by the city to house refugees were all be cleared out.

“We are out of crisis mode and now in a more regulated situation in terms of accommodations,” said Carolin Krause, the new department head of education, health and social welfare. But she adds that the topic is far from over and that the emphasis is now on integrating those who will stay in Bonn. She says an important aspect is finding permanent living spaces for the refugees.

There are currently four projects to build up mobile living containers. The city plans to continue with those projects, which will offer 900 persons a place to live. Mobile containers on Siegburger Straße and Herz-Jesu-Kloster are expected to be finished in the middle of this year, and the ones on Rheinweg and at Reuterpark are expected to be completed in June. A building at Koblenzer Straße 148 is being converted and it’s projected completion date is in March.

The former Michaelschule (Michael school) in Bad Godesberg will be cleared out by the end of January. 42 refugees had been housed there temporarily. At this time, there are 2,842 refugees who are in an asylum seeking process in Bonn. The number of unaccompanied minors has remained unchanged at 240. (Orig. text: ga)
