Listeria-tainted sausage from a plant in Hesse resulted in two deaths. A product recall has affected distributors in almost all regions of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 48 of the 53 districts and cities in the state, retailers had purchased products from the company Wilke, the NRW Ministry of Consumer Protection announced on Saturday in response to an inquiry. Further details were not released. The local veterinary and consumer protection offices contacted the affected retailers and supervised the product recall, said a spokesperson for the National Office for Consumer Protection.

After two deaths and several cases of illness caused by the listeria-contaminated sausage, the organization Foodwatch demanded immediate measures to protect consumers. They urge authorities to provide extensive information about the products affected in the production facility of the North Hessian plant and about the sales locations of the products, said a spokesperson. In the products of the manufacturer Wilke Waldecker Fleisch- und Wurstwaren GmbH & Co. KG from Twistetal, listeria had been detected several times. The consumer organization criticized the crisis management of the administrative district and the regional council as being catastrophic.
