Approximately one and a half years after the laying of the foundation stone, the next milestone of the "Urban Soul" construction project has been reached. In the presence of Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan and representatives from politics, administration, companies involved in the construction, future tenants and neighbours, the topping-out ceremony for the new quarter at Bonn Central Station was celebrated on Thursday under the motto "Bonn shines, Urban Soul shines“.

At a central location, on the future piazza, the alignment wreaths were hoisted. "Here a new favourite place of the Bonners should develop", as managing director Stefan Mühling of the developer project development told. "Today is a premiere for us, because a few days ago the space we are now standing on did not exist," said Mühling.

The piazza, which extends in front of Motel One and the Lifestyle House, will offer visitors new seating options in the future. "With Urban Soul, repair work is being done in a place that has long been unsightly," said Sridharan. "Now we're getting a whole new entrance in downtown Bonn." According to the Lord Mayor, Bonn has been growing as a business location "with high quality" for many years. According to Sridharan, the construction and real estate sector in Bonn, which would implement many projects in the city, would also have contributed to this.

„Urban soul“ is part of „Bonn shines“

In his view, the "Urban Soul" project is "an excellent example of this dynamism". Bastian Julius, Managing Director of Urban Soul, was pleased with the progress of the project: "At the topping-out ceremony, we not only want to thank all the builders and participants for their commitment, but also make the new urban quarter shine. That's why we're participating in 'Aktion Bonn leuchtet'," said Julius. The intention was to give the residents and visitors of the city "a little something back for the inconvenience during the construction phase," he explained.

The facades on Poststrasse and Thomas-Mann-Strasse are to be brightly illuminated until 3 November, from dusk until 10 pm. More than 150 spotlights will then provide the radiant power. Now that most of the structural work has been completed, the finishing touches are underway "at full speed": "The windows and façade of the City Office on Rabinstraße have already been completed. The interior work on the office space has begun and the car park façade is already half finished," reports a spokeswoman from Urban Soul.

Area of three building parts

At "Lifestyle House" and "Motel One", the first brick surfaces are already up. "When designing the façade, it was particularly important to us that the new architecture was integrated seamlessly into the existing urban fabric," explained architect Cornelius Wens. "For the two buildings on Maximilianstrasse, high-quality clinker bricks were deliberately selected to harmonise with the existing buildings and the surroundings," he added. With a probable construction period of seven years, "Urban Soul" is one of the largest construction projects in Bonn in recent years, Mühling said.

Around 100 construction workers are currently working on the new site, which consists of three building sections. More than 500 jobs are to be created at the site in the future. The first building to go into operation is the City Office in the summer of 2020. The Lifestyle House and the hotel are to be completed in the same year.
