BONN/REGION · Family-run bakeries are becoming increasingly rare. They are often replaced by large chains. In our overview we list bakeries in Bonn and the region where they still honour craftsmanship and traditional recipes.
Bread rolls for Sunday breakfast, freshly baked bread for the end of the day and snacks when visiting good friends: Numerous bakeries in Bonn and the region offer their customers a wide range of products - off the beaten track. Here’s an overview.
Max Kugel in Bonn
TV chef Johann Lafer described him as the best baker of the year in 2015, and two years later he opened his own bakery on the Bonn Talweg: Max Kugel bakes bread with passion. The slogan is: "Where there's only bread" - "bread with character", as the young owner emphatically emphasizes. Max Kugel's range includes nut breads, black breads, wholemeal rye breads and Föhrer white bread. Kugel collected the inspiration for this on numerous journeys and stopovers at confectioners and bakeries all over the world.

Town bread bakers Rott in Bonn and the region
For more than 120 years, the town bread baker Rott has been represented in Bonn and the region. The family-owned company operates branches at 17 locations. There, however, the range is not the same every day. In the Südstadt, for example, the popular pumpkin seed bread is only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Rott also offers baguette rolls, the grain rolls "Bonner Junge" and "Bonner Mädchen", Eifelerbrot, Berliner Roggenbrot as well as a selection of cakes and sweet pastries. According to Rott's own statements, he obtains all raw materials from the region and supports local cultivation.

Bakery Knipp in Oberkassel
The Nikolaus Knipp bakery is now run by the fourth generation as a family business. What is important to the bakery apart from traditional bread handicrafts: Sustainability. For example, the delivery vehicles run on electricity and the electricity required for the bakery is produced with a fuel cell in the bakery's own cellar.

Bakery Markmann in Friesdorf
The Markmann bakery has two branches on Annaberger Straße in Friesdorf. Especially in the morning the waiting times are long. Industrial goods are not to be found in the showcases, instead there are freshly baked rolls, breads and sweet pastries. Spelt variations are particularly popular with customers. Every November Markmann also organises the so-called "Riesenweckmann-Aktion" for the Friesdorfer Martinszug on behalf of the Bonn Children's Cancer Aid.

Bakery Gruhn in Endenich
The Gruhn bakery and pastry shop in Endenich offers homemade delicacies ranging from pastries and pralines to traditional breads. The foundation stone for today's business on Frongasse was laid by the great-grandfather of the present owner in 1850.
Gruhn offers Holsteiner bread, wholemeal cereals, muesli rolls and winegrower rolls. The cakes offer varietiesfrom strawberry cake and Swabian apple to Baumkuchen with champagne cream.

Bakery Kries
The bakery and confectionery Kries has been producing bakery and confectionery products in Bornheim since 1949. In order to produce an optimal aroma, many bread doughs are stored overnight before processing. The bakery also delivers fresh rolls to the front door by 6.15 a.m. on request.
On Sunday there is a particularly large cake selection in the Bornheimer business.
