Weekend April 14 - 16 What’s happening in Bonn and the region?

Bonn/Region · There is a lot going on over Easter – you can take part in an egg and spoon race in Friedrichstrasse, hunt for eggs at the Drachenfels, visit the Ehrenbreitstein fortress in Koblenz for a light show and take part in various hands-on Easter activities, or if you don’t mind spiders, check out the exhibition with live spiders and scorpions from all over world at the Alexander König museum.

Looking for a way to get involved in the local expat community? BonnEnglish organizes discussion groups with English speakers and English learners. Groups meet in local cafes to discuss new topics each week.

Please note that on Good Friday public sport, music and dancing events are prohibited in Germany.

BONN

Visit the island Grafenwerth in Bad Honnef with its green areas for playing games or relaxing, popular beer garden, children’s playground, open air pool and new attraction – crazy golf, which is open daily from midday. The island is a car-free zone. Parking is available on the Rhine ­pro­me­na­de or at the end of the tram line 66 as well as Loh­fel­der Stra­ße (bridge towards the outdoor pool).

An Easter walk through the Botanical Gardens in Poppelsdorf is a must. How about on Good Friday? The gardens are open daily except on Saturdays from 10am until 6pm. Entry on Sundays and public holidays costs 3 Euro (1 Euro reduced).

REGION

Ehrenbrettstein fortress in Koblenz: from 13-17 April and 21-23 April there is a light and art show. On Saturday 15 April ‘Living History’ a gunsmith’s workshop from 1-6pm. Lots of hands-on activities on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday from 1pm. More information at this website!

Open Air Museum (LVR-Freilichtmuseum) in Mechernich-Kommern: open daily from 10am – 7pm. Entry costs 7.50 Euro, children under 18 are free. Until Sunday 23 April visit the ‘Jahr­markt an­no da­zu­mal’ with around 90 historic rides, merry-go-rounds and market stalls from former times. At Ei­ckser Stra­ße in Me­cher­nich-Kom­mern. BONN

International Bonn Egg Race Championships: The shops on Frie­drich­stra­ße are organising an egg race from 2-4pm. The route is 30m long. Each participant must carry an egg on a spoon over the finish line without dropping it. But luckily the eggs are made of plastic. All those taking part will receive a certificate and a real Easter egg.

Open top bus tour: The GA open top bus offers a two-hour tour, leaving at 2pm on Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday and at 11am on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Meet at Bonn Information on the corner of Windeckstraße 1/ Münsterplatz. Adults 16 Euro; Family ticket 32 Euro. REGION

Drachfels: On Easter Saturday and Sunday there is an Easter egg hunt at the Drachenfels from 11am-6pm. Cards will be handed out at the castle, restaurant, railway and the reptile park. These contain clues on where to find the eggs. The answers must be submitted by 6pm and all those taking part will receive Easter bread or an Easter cake (as long as they last). Sweets will be on offer for children at the reptile park.

Burg Wissem: At the palace in Troisdorf there is a picture book museum as well as a museum for urban and industrial history (Musit). Current exhibitions are abstract American and European artists of 20th century and “Heimt der Fremde” (home for strangers) about local guest works who come to work and live in the area in the 1960s. Both museums inside the palace are open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm. Entry is 5 Euros for adults and 2 Euros for children. More information at this website!

Bon­n Müns­ter: worshippers will meet in the cloister at 5am on Easter Sunday. An Easter fire will be lit and brought through the dark church in a procession. Easter fires will also be lit in other evangelical and catholic churches.
