New stores in the city What’s changing in Bonn city center

Lots of changes are happening in the Bonn city center as old businesses close their doors and new ones open up shop. Japanese food, a retailer focused on household and garden goods, and a tea shop are among the new places while a shoe store goes out of business after 28 years.

There is a constant stream of shops coming and going in Bonn’s inner city: In the heart of the city center, for example, a number of long-established stores at the Markt (the market square in front of the old town hall) have closed, and new tenants are gradually moving into them. A kebab snack bar has already opened in the former Mc Donald's.

In the immediate vicinity of the fast-food restaurant was a dry cleaners, which kept people in clean clothes for decades. It has also been replaced with an eating establishment, "Homei" is the name of the snack bar, where Gyoza, Japanese dumplings, are freshly prepared in all variations - since a few days already.

Another "food mile" is emerging at the Markt

This has created another small food mile on that side of the market square. In a shop opposite, where until recently the fashion label Gerry Weber offered clothes and accessories, a Manufactum store is expected to open there next spring. It is expected to offer a range of items from wristwatches to slicers, from garden shears to facial soaps, notebooks to bedside lamps or from down jackets made of recycled fiber to repair services. The sales area is 350 square meters, and renovation work will begin soon.

According to the spokeswoman of the company, Manufactum relies on "high-quality, repairable products as well as a timeless design". The " Magazin" in Bonn on Berliner Freiheit also belongs to Manufactum. It is found in ten German cities and in Vienna.

New pharmacy in Sternstrasse

A little further on is Sternstrasse where the former Löwen pharmacy has been under reconstruction for a long time already. According to neighboring businesses, a pharmacy will probably move in there again. One reason for the remodel work is the new building regulation for pharmacies, which among other things, mandates that they must be accessible without barriers in the future. Another construction site is the retail space next door, which once offered everything related to hairdresser supplies. According to the owner, a barrier-free entrance will also be created there. She does not yet know who the future tenant will be. "In any case, there will be a retail store again," she said.

Because the lease will end, a branch of the Landgraf shoe store at Vivatsgasse/corner of Bottlerplatz will close after 28 years. A clearance sale is in full swing there right now. And next door, where once a travel agency was situated, tea-based drinks will soon be on sale: Teamate is the name of the new tea house, which previously operated branches in Düsseldorf and Neuss.

“CalitO eSmoke" is now at home in the former Werner pharmacy at Friedensplatz and the lights go out in a former lighting store on Friedrichstraße. Owner York Wilms-Posen, who has been active in retail trade since 1980, says it is a consequence of a "negative economic" development. However, he wanted to continue with the repair of lampshades and lighting planning. Wilms-Posen sees himself as part of a general development that many regret without having done anything to act against it. He would like to see more awareness on the part of those who support this development by ordering on the internet and staying away from the businesses in the city center.
