Unknown culprits have tortured a mare with electric fencing material in the meadow An der Haeschmaar. Only a few days prior, unknowns had cut open the meadow fencing and let three horses run out.
The shock was huge when Manuela Kuhl and her 15-year-old daughter got to the meadow An der Haeschmaar on Saturday afternoon and when they found one of their horses with electric fencing material wrapped around its ankle.
The strapping, which is normally used to repair paddock railings, had already rubbed an open wound in the leg of the 13-year-old mare called Lantana . The band was strapped so tightly around the ankle that Manuela Kuhl could only remove it with special pliers.
„We were of course totally appalled“, said Kuhl in a conversation with the GA. „Lantana could have stumbled and broken her legs.“ It wasn’t the first time that horses in this field were tortured by unknown people: Only last year a friend of Kuhl’s noticed that two horses there had slings wrapped around their necks made from the same fencing material. „The culprits back then and this weekend must have known their way around“, said Kuhl. They seemingly knew where to switch off the electric fence before they cut it.
„On Tuesday somebody had already cut it so that the horses ran away“, said Kuhl. For three hours she had searched for the animals with the help of her daughter and friends. „That is of course very dangerous, the horses could have run out on a street or even the motorway.“ They asked every walker and jogger while searching, some had indeed seen the horses. „We found them in a field near the Brüser village, where they were munching away peacefully.“ They contacted the police about the incident but only filed an official complaint on Saturday. „The police were there in two minutes, took down all the details and took photos as well.“
Kuhl hopes that the animal abusers will be caught this time. After the incident last year, nothing came of it. „Maybe somebody has seen something this time.“ She said she is now very concerned that something could happen to her horses again. „We are considering installing a camera at the meadow.“ Either way she is going to check on the horses with her daughter several times a day.
