Bonn · Many motorists are puzzled when they want to drive into the University Parking Garage these days. The metal roll up security gate is shut and gives the impression that the garage is closed. But this is not the case.

Don’t be fooled: the roll up gate to the University Parking Garage appears to be shut, but it opens up when you take your ticket.

The University Parking Garage has been open again since April, but anyone who wants to park there is confronted with a metal roll up door that is shut. Contrary to what some might think, the parking garage is not closed, the roll up gate opens after you have taken your ticket.

This is obviously not clear to everybody; many drivers back up from the garage entry and start looking for another parking place. Originally, the rolling gate was only supposed to be lowered in the evening to protect the parking decks and their users from uninvited visitors. This was explained by the operator, Bonner City-Parkraum GmbH (BCP) when the garage was re-opened. It had been closed for renovations in 2013, at a cost of 19 million euros (the GA reported).

According to Veronika John, spokeswoman for SWB and BCP, the roll up gate has been kept down during the corona crisis as there is little activity in the city center. This ensures more security for those who use the parking garage. “The garage is less frequently used because of the Covid 19 pandemic. In order to offer our customers increased security in the garage, the garage cannot be accessed on foot via the entrances and exits. The staircases and the elevator are also only opened with the customer's parking ticket," said John. Like the Stadthausgarage and Marktgarage, the University Parking Garage is open around the clock. During the day, however, around 250 of the 448 spaces are used by university employees.

New parking garage to open May 18

According to John, the new multi-level car park from the company "Developer" on Rabinstrasse (258 parking spaces) is scheduled to open on May 18. As reported, the Opera Parking Garage is also open again. And there are more parking spaces in the Beethoven Garage, Friedensplatzgarage and Münsterplatzgarage. These four parking garages still have limited opening hours at the moment due to the corona crisis: They are open daily from 7 am to 9 pm and on Sundays from 9 am to 9 pm.

"BCP is keeping a close eye on the situation and will return to normal opening hours as soon as more visitors come into the city center by car again," says John.
