A brawl overshadows the Ippendorf carnival procession: After the „Jecken“ had marched through the streets on Sunday, several unknown persons beat up a young man who had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries. The scene of the crime was a remote sports field, where more than 100 young people had gathered. The meeting place has been popular with young people for years. "There you are unobserved, you can party and drink," says a young man from Bonn.

A football that the 16-year-old and his friends had caught during the parade was apparently the trigger for an argument. While the group was celebrating and kicking around on the field, they suddenly met older people who wanted to join in. As a result, the situation escalated, as the police reported: Around 4 p.m., unidentified persons, not dressed up, knocked the 16-year-old to the ground and continued to kick him even after he was unconscious. The boy was so badly injured that he had to spend the night in hospital because of a concussion and severe bruises. Two of his friends were also attacked: The older ones threatened the 12- and 13-year-olds and took their money, a music box and a necklace from them. When the police arrived with flashing blue lights, the perpetrators fled unrecognised. The officers were only able to catch one 14-year-old suspect, who was later released because, according to the police, there were no grounds for arrest.

More and more riots and scuffles

The mother of a boy who was attacked is shocked. "What happened there is way beyond normal adolescence." In any case, the Ippendorf carnival is no longer the "family parade that it used to be". More and more frequently, riots and scuffles would occur, and to such an extent that some would stay away from the event. "That's a pity, but unfortunately the reality. There is something wrong here," she says with a certain perplexity. She says it is understandable that young people meet where they are not being observed. Nevertheless, the authorities have to act on such excesses of violence.

Young people in Bonn also report such situations, especially around the sports field. "I would not like to go there alone. Most people there are normal, but there are also shady characters running around," says one youngster. He saw the incident on Sunday from a distance. "When the police came, everyone ran away. We saw someone lying at the gate." Although there were many people around, apparently only a few noticed something.

The authorities were not inactive - but not at the right time. The prevention concept includes, for example, the addiction mobile Eventsprinter. It stood at the Bernhard-Berzheim-Platz, about 500 meters away from the sports field. "The city planning service carried out more checks during and after the carnival procession," says Isabel Klotz from the press office. This included places where it was known that young people were meeting. There was also a presence on the sports field - "but only after the aforementioned incident and after controls in other areas of Ippendorf, where drunken youths have also repeatedly been noticed in recent years". Around 130 people were frisked, more than 80 shots, twelve self-mixed high-proof drinks and seven cigarette packets were confiscated.

No permanent presence guaranteed

Controls are always planned at the known locations, but it is not possible to guarantee a permanent presence at many locations at the same time. "However, the city planning service, in coordination with the police, was subsequently able to make a significant contribution to ensuring that there were no further violent incidents on the sports field, where many young people remained still after the incident," Klotz said.

A short time later, there were new fights at a carnival event in Ippendorf on Röttgener Straße: At about 5.40 pm a 19-year-old was punched in the face with a fist and kicked while lying on the ground. One and a half hours later, a 24-year-old got into an argument with three people on the street, during which one of the men hit him on the head with a bottle. In both cases, the perpetrator is described as approximately mid-20s, 1.75 metres tall, with black hair and a tiger costume.
