The North Bridge in Bonn will be replaced by a new bridge construction from 2028. Friederike Schaffrath, project manager at the NRW state roads department, has now confirmed this to the General Anzeiger. The bridge, built in 1967, is getting old and must be replaced, as it cannot feasibly be used for the planned six-lane expansion.

The expansion to three lanes on both sides between the motorway junction Bonn-Nord (A 555) and the motorway junction Bonn-Nordost (A 59) is listed in the Federal Traffic Routing Plan under “additional need”. It was not completely clear at first that this would also result in the complete demolition of the Friedrich-Ebert-Bridge, commonly called the North Bridge. The structure, including the foreland bridges, is around 1290 metres long and is considered the first modern cable-stayed bridge. During an inspection in 2007, it was considered that a general overhaul was needed. This will now be replaced by the new construction.

The state department considers the planning of a wider bridge to be full of obstacles because the existing development on the west side is very dense and on the east side, the Siegaue flora-fauna-habitat area requires special planning care. According to the state department, the more urgent construction projects will be completed before 2028. The most important issue is the so-called “Tausendfüßler”. The preparatory works are currently underway. Among other things, plots of land must still be acquired along the route.

Construction work on the section of the A 565 motorway between Endenicher Ei and the Bonn-Nord motorway junction, which is in urgent need of repair, is scheduled to begin in 2020 and be completed by 2027. A six-lane expansion is also planned here. Work will also start at around the same time in two places on the A59 on the right side of the Rhine: the stretch between the motorway Bonn-Ost junction (A 562) to Bonn-Vilich will also become six lanes. Eight lanes are planned from the Bonn-Nordost motorway junction to the Sankt Augustin motorway junction.

The state roads department has set up a task force to coordinate the construction works in Bonn and the surrounding area. Around 30 employees have been housed together in the branch office in Euskirchen. Their main task is to plan the construction works so that rush hour traffic is not unduly affected and work can be carried out quickly.
