The flavors of Christmas Tasty treats at Christmas markets in the Rhineland

Rhineland · Christmas markets will open again beginning in mid-November and many of them will tempt visitors with mulled wine and bratwurst. But there are also unusual or traditional specialities that will lure in visitors to these markets.

Hearty Christmas liver sausage and Printen in Aachen

The world-famous Aachener Printen (Christmas cookies) are not only sold at the Christmas market in Aachen - visitors can actually see how the cookies are made in a demonstration bakery. But the Aachen Christmas market around the cathedral and the town hall also offers a special delicacy for those who like it hearty: Aachen Christmas liver sausage. Various butchers have been making the sausages since the 19th century, refining them with nuts, cranberries and traditional winter spices. In addition, the Aachen Christmas Market, which is regularly voted among the Top 10 of Europe's Best Christmas Markets, offers the Aachen Cathedral Liqueur as well as specialities from the Eifel region. From November 23 to December 23 the market is open daily from 11 am to 9 pm. On December 25, the stands will be open once again from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m..

Dom Spekulatius, Rievkooche and bonbons in Cologne

From November 26 to December 23, Cologne's Christmas markets invite you to enjoy a wide range of eats and drinks. Spekulatius is a type of Christmas cookie that generally comes in a butter or spiced version. If you add the word “Dom” (Cathedral) to the front of it, it means Cathedral Spekulatius, implying a Cologne specialty. Rievkooche is the Kölsch word for Reibekuchen, which is a delicious potato pancake traditionally served with apple mousse. These treats can be found at the "Christmas Market at the Cathedral". If you go to the Alter Markt, check out "Heinzels Wintermärchen" where visitors can watch bonbons being whipped up from a mass of sugar at the candy makers.

Homemade goose liver terrine by star chef in Kerpen: from December 21 - 23, the Christmas market at Schloss Loersfeld offers a speciality from the castle kitchen. In addition to musical accompaniment and numerous exhibitors, visitors can enjoy the homemade goose liver terrine made only by Germany's youngest star chef Julia Komp. The Christmas Market is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and from 12 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Homemade baked goods from the museum oven in Mechernich

The LVR Open Air Museum in Kommern offers very special Christmas tastes during "Advent for all the senses". During the first and second weekends of Advent, the museum's ovens bake Christmas treats such as Bratäpfel (baked apples), Printen and Spekulatius cookies. Staff prepare hot chestnuts, honey cake and Feuerzangenbowle ( a red wine punch) for visitors. The opening hours are from 10am to 8pm.

Home-roasted coffee in the "Copper Town" Stolberg

Stolberg, around 5 kilometers from Aachen, is not only celebrating its 900th anniversary this year, but also the "Copper Town" Christmas holidays. On the five weekends before Christmas, the Old Town invites visitors to the various castle courtyards. Here you will find handcrafted items and culinary specialities. In the Torburg Museum, which also participates in the pre-Christmas market, crafts enthusiasts can take part in workshops, for example on soap making and coffee roasting. The Chocolate Museum in Cologne is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is ringing in the Christmas season with the Chocolatiers' Market. From November 14 -18, numerous stands with a variety of chocolates and sweets await visitors directly in front of the museum. For all chocolate lovers, there will be 70 national and international chocolatiers offering their sweets. Admission is free. The market is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m..
