Warning of the farmers' association : Supply gaps for fruit and vegetables possible

Some types of fruit and vegetables could soon be more sparse on supermarket shelves. The reason is the entry ban for seasonal workers. This could also have an impact on prices.

According to the German Farmers' Association, some types of fruit and vegetables could become scarce due to the entry ban for seasonal workers. "The supply of basic foodstuffs is not at risk, but there may well be gaps in the supply of various crops in the fruit and vegetable sector," Association President Joachim Rukwied told the German Press Agency.

Consumers must also expect higher prices for asparagus and berries, for example. "This shortage will also have an impact on prices.“

According to the Farmers' Association, there are normally around 300,000 seasonal workers per year working on German farms. The Federal Ministry of the Interior, however, issued an entry ban last week to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus. Rukwied said that this would hit fruit, vegetable and wine growers in particular, but also larger animal farms "very hard". The entry ban must therefore be kept "as short as possible".
