Bonn’s Lord Mayor on integration Sridharan speaks out against full-face veil

Bonn · Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan has spoken in a newspaper interview about the full veiling of Muslim women. This does not correspond to the local way of life. However, he considers separate swimming times for Muslim women unproblematic.

Bonn’s Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan (CDU) has spoken out against the full-face veil in a newspaper interview. In his new role as integration expert for the federal government, Sridharan told the daily paper “Die Welt” that it was clear that “a full veil does not correspond to our way of life.” He hopes for “more respect for our customs” from fully veiled Muslim women. As Lord Mayor of Bonn, he said his hands are tied with regard to the full veil. “I can’t ignore the legal framework of the Federal Republic,” he said.

Sridharan was open to separate swimming times for Muslim women in Bonn swimming pools. “I consider separate swimming times for Muslims to be unproblematic,” he said. Women only swimming would be attended not only by Muslim women but also by women who did not belong to Islam.

Sridharan is co-chairing the new special committee. The core task of the advisory body is to improve the integration of refugees and migrants. Sridharan described the cooperation in Bonn as good but the financing of accommodation was a major issue. “The funds made available to us by the federal government for the migrants is not sufficient to cover the costs.”
