Wachtberg - Adendorf Pottery weekend coming up

ADENDORF · Next weekend, the pottery workshops of Adendorf invite you to come and explore their work and maybe even try your own hand.

From the 40 pottery workshops that used to exist in Adendorf, only three are still there. On October 8 and 9, visitors will have a chance to explore the past and present with historical documentation but also a look at what is happening there today. It’s the 40th time pottery shops will be inviting the public to come and browse and also try out their own skills.

Pottery making has long been a tradition in Adendorf, dating back to the 18th Century. The word for pottery shops in German is “Töpferei” and there is a whole street with this name in the small village. Adendorf proved an ideal location for pottery making because of the availability of clay as well as the large amount of wood needed to fire the ovens. There was also a good source for the expensive salt needed for the glazing process.

The Hansen and Günther pottery shops will be open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on October 8 and 9. Soendgen Keramik will open as well. Handcrafted items and art work will be available for purchase, everything from modern to traditional and many different shapes and forms.

For anyone who gets the urge to try their luck with pottery work, visitors will be able to work with clay bowls, decorating them. Some might just discover - it’s not as easy as it may look.
