City recreation Possible designs for a new Bonn swimming pool

Winners have been announced in the architectural competition for the new Bonn swimming pool. A design from a Dresden architectural firm took first place.

Dresden architectural bureau Code Unique came in first place in the competition to design the new Bonn swimming pool. On Thursday, a jury reached their decision after a seven-hour session reviewing the nine entries. Landing in places two and three were the 4a Architects firm from Stuttgart and KSP Jürgen Engel from Braunschweig.

The expert jury with twenty members had begun their meeting at 9 am, with architect Rolf Westerheide serving as chair. Now, building costs will have to be determined for each of the winning designs before the final winner is chosen. After that, a concept explaining the decision will be submitted to the city council in December. So far, the SWB (City public works) and the city administration have not even had the chance to work out rough cost estimates.

The selection of the three winning designs was carried out exactly five days after a citizens’ referendum on the future of the Kurfürstenbad. In that vote, a narrow majority of 51.64 percent decided against renovating the Bad Godesberg indoor swimming pool.

Almost 40 percent of residents participated in the referendum. Bonn city administration, along with the majority of the council and the city sports association had called for a “no” vote. They did not want to jeopardize the construction of a new swimming pool in Dottendorf. The city council had decided last year that two older facilities, Kurfürstenbad and Frankenbad would have to be closed down before a new pool could be built.

The new swimming facility is designed for schools, sports events and also leisure swimmers. There is a 25-meter long pool with ten lanes to be used by schools and for sporting events, and a second pool with a recreational area, several slides and a diving board as well as eight lanes. It is also 25-meters in length. Parking places for 400 cars and bikes (with roof) are also envisioned.

The winning architects from Dresden plan a facade made of glass and concrete. Inside, they would have some green areas for relaxation and quiet zones. The family area with the adventure pool and splash pool would be in the southern area with access to a sunbathing meadow and a heated outdoor pool. The sports pool would be in the northern area and could be separated during sports competitions. A spa and sauna would be on a quiet upper level.
