Bonn central train station Police identify bomb threat caller

Bonn · Police say they have identified the man who called in a bomb threat at the Bonn central train station on Friday.

Police say they have identified the person who called in a bomb threat to the Bonn Fire Department on Good Friday. It was apparently a 38-year-old man who is mentally ill. He has been brought to a hospital and will remain there for the time being. Police will press charges for abusing the emergency calling system and threatening a crime against the state.

After the call was received on Friday, police had to close off the Bonn central station for several hours while they searched it with trained police dogs. Police spokesperson Robert Scholten says they are proofing whether or not they can demand payment for the extensive security measures that were required due to the threat. Because many different police units were involved, this could be difficult.

Police traced the call to a public phone booth near the Kaiser Karl Clinic north of the city center. The call came at 4:15 p.m. on Friday afternoon from a man speaking broken German and saying there was a bomb at the Bonn central train station. It was closed off for three hours during the police search and one train had to be evacuated while others were diverted through Beuel. (Orig. text: Philipp Königs)
