Bonn swimming pools Plans revealed for indoor pools as outdoor season extended

Bonn · Open-air pools will stay open another two weeks but the Kurfürstenbad will be permanently closed.

Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan revealed his plans for Bonn’s swimming pools on Thursday. Latest update: the outdoor pools will not close on Sunday but will remain open for another two weeks. The outdoor swimming season will now end on 11 September.

Other plans are:

In the Sportpark Wasserland: there will be a new swimming pool. The city council will decide whether this will be an indoor pool or a combination (partly outdoor) pool. When it opens in four years, the Frankenbad will close. The building time should be two and a half years.

Kurfürstenbad: as many feared, the pool, which closed at the end of May because of technical problems, will not reopen. Sridharan said it made no sense to invest in repairs only until the new pool at Wasserland opened. The problems with electrics, ventilation and heating were too severe. The Bad Godesberg site will be put on the market.

Friesdorf outdoor pool: will have an air dome so that it can be used in winter. In summer the dome can be taken down so the pool can be open-air.

Hardtberg pool: renovations are to be prioritised.

Outdoor pools: private operators will be sought to relieve the burden on the city treasury. The pools are too expensive for the city, with estimated deficits of Euro 700,000 in 2017 and Euro 740,000 in 2018.

„After many years, we are pleased to make suggestions to the city council on a future perspective,”said Sridharan at a press conference at which he first announced the extension of the outdoor pool season. The two week time period will be used to carry out maintenance works on the indoor pools. (Orig. text: Rolf Kleinfeld; translated by Kate Carey)
