Bonn restaurant scene : Pie Me in Endenich offers Australian cuisine

An Australian man has been operating a popular food truck at three locations in Bonn (Bonner Bogen, UN Campus and DAAD) and one in Cologne for the past three years. Now he has opened the Pie Me Australian Café and Pie Bar in Bonn-Endenich.

Not only the tables and counter, but also the black "Frankfurter" chairs are made in the Netherlands from recycled wood. Black lamps in an industrial look complete the casual ambience of the restaurant which offers seating for 25 guests. Twelve persons can also be seated in front of the restaurant. "It's an honor for me to be here on the Endenicher Kulturmeile," says Gareth Patterson Were, the 39-year-old owner. His philosophy: "I want to bring a product to the table that is tasty, healthy, sustainable, regional and inexpensive". An Australian pie is best enjoyed with mashed potatoes and salad - then it's not just a snack, it's a real meal".

You can choose from eight different pies, such as Pulled Pork or Chicken-Curry (4.80 euros each) and Spinach-Ricotta (4.50 euros each), which can be enhanced with ten different sauces. The mashed potatoes, made from potatoes grown in Bonn and the green salad with orange and walnut dressing cost three euros. For dessert, various crumbles such as apple or raspberry (three euros) are tempting, and whipped cream or vanilla ice cream can be added for an extra charge of 1.50 euros. In addition, there are seven breakfast options starting at 3.50 euros.

The coffee specialities are prepared with an Italian coffee maker from Rocket (espresso two euros, flat white 2.60 euros) and there are six fruit juices from Van Nahmen (0.2 l for 2.90 euros). The small wine list includes wines from Australia (e.g. Chardonnay Koonunga Hill by Penfolds for 20 euros), New Zealand, South Africa, Germany and Italy.
