BONN · Carelessly discarded rubbish creates unattractive pictures in Bonn's inner city. Why the small rubbish bins have not long since been replaced by larger bins remains a mystery for our author.

Overflowing rubbish bins in Bonn's city centre and carelessly discarded rubbish in the street corners: Hardly any other topic is a regular cause for complaint for many Bonn residents and visitors to the city. Of course, there are other topics causing complaints such as unpunctual local traffic, potholes in the streets and the eternal conflict between pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and, more recently, e-scooters. If one were to create a ranking, the rubbish issue would certainly rank first.

Not for the first time, for example, the Bürger Bund complains about the unsightly picture in the city centre on Sunday, because Bonnorange interrupted the collection schedule and many businessmen had already put their garbage cans in front of the shop door ready for collection. Every Sunday again and again. And really not a pretty sight for all those who want to enjoy a stroll through the city centre without the hustle and bustle.

The crux: The rubbish bins in the city are much too small. Why they haven't long been replaced by larger bins remains a mystery. Because the problem has existed for years and has been discussed for a correspondingly long time in the council committees. To make matters worse, all initiatives to reduce packaging waste such as pizza cartons or plastic and paper cups have obviously not been successful to date. Finally, Bonnorange itself has been promoting the idea of using a refillable cup to take away coffee ("coffee to go") with a lot of fanfare on Münsterplatz.

The higher fines introduced since the beginning of the year by the city of Bonn for carelessly discarded cigarettes or packaging have so far obviously had no deterrent effect. From this point of view, the replacement of too small waste bins would be a more effective step towards a cleaner Bonn city.
