Man wielding an axe
On Saturday evening in Bonn, a man was seen running along Römerstraße with an axe. Passers-by raised the alarm at around 8.30pm and the police arrived on the scene 10 minutes later. They arrested the man near to the Aral service station. The police reported that no one was injured. They further stated that the man is presumed to be mentally disturbed and is now being examined in a psychiatric institution.

Fire caused by burning wooden pallets
At around 6pm on Saturday evening the fire brigade were called to a fire at the premises of a cleaning company in Dransdorf. Residents living near to the industrial area on Justus-von-Liebig-Straße, at the corner of Bunsenstraße, had alerted the fire department after seeing thick smoke in the courtyard of the cleaning company. Fire chief Wolfgang Sporer said on site that the fire was quickly extinguished and there was no longer any danger to the residents.
The humidity of the pallets had probably caused the thick smoke to develop. The police assume that a senior employee of the cleaning company was trying to burn old wooden pallets in the courtyard without permission in order to dispose of them. As a precautionary measure, the police have taken the personal data of the employee.

Bomb threat at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz
On Saturday afternoon at around 1pm a man blocked the door of a tram at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, preventing the tram from moving. Police stated that the tram driver approached the 32-year-old man who told him that he had "a bomb". The tram driver immediately alerted the police via the control centre and the tram was evacuated. Officers of the Bonn City Guard were quickly on the scene and managed to overpower and arrest the man using pepper spray. He was brought to the police headquarters shortly afterwards.
According to the police, there are no indications so far that the bomb threat was politically or religiously motivated. Initial questioning suggests that the man is ill and he has been admitted to a clinic following a medical examination. Police investigations against the 32-year-old for disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit a crime are still ongoing.

New children’s centre opens at University Hospital
On Friday Bonn University Hospital (Uniklinik, UKB) opened its new Parent-Child Centre (Eltern-Kinder Zentrum in German, or Elki for short). It should be fully operational by May following the relocation of the old children's clinic on Adenauerallee. The Ministry of Science has provided 112 million euros for the construction on the Venusberg (88 million euros for the construction and the remainder for the medical facility).
At the Elki, the University Hospital now offers outpatient obstetrics and paediatrics with an emergency room. There is a paediatric oncology day clinic and a nursing ward with bone marrow transplantation rooms, four operating theatres and five birth rooms for the midwife group. In addition, UKB is a leader in prenatal diagnostics and intensive care for premature babies.
