Crash in Wesseling: Police car overturns several times after collision

WESSELING. A police car overturned several times on Saturday afternoon on the L 192 after a collision with two cars. According to a police spokeswoman, a 44-year-old policeman was seriously injured.

According to the current state of investigation, the police car was on its way from Urfeld to Ahrstraße at about 5.20 p.m. with the blue light switched on and the siren Martinshorn on, when it collided with a VW Eos at the junction of the A 555 exit in Wesseling when the latter was about to turn into the L 192. Due to the force of the impact, the police car overturned and was thrown against a BMW standing at the traffic light there. The police car flew over the BMW and only came to a standstill behind it. Another vehicle was lightly touched.

Two 17- and 19-year-old women sitting in the VW as well as the two male 30- and 31-year-old passengers of the BMW were slightly injured in the accident. They all went to the hospital in Wesseling.

The seriously injured policeman, who was alone in the ambulance, was taken to the university hospital in Cologne. It remains to be clarified how exactly the collision occurred.

Bark beetle aftermath: 20,000 trees must be felled in Bad Honnef

SIEBENGEBIRGE. The bark beetle has destroyed large parts of the tree population in the Bad Honnef city forest, around two thirds of the old spruces are threatened. According to experts, the situation is quite dramatic. About four weeks ago, the situation worsened. The second dry summer in a row resulted in the spruce forests in the Siebengebirge being attacked by the bark beetle to an even greater extent than last year. The mountain region of the Bad Honnef city forest, which covers a total area of around 1200 hectares, is particularly affected.

About half of the tree population consists of spruce. "The situation is quite dramatic," says Stephan Schütte from the Rhein-Sieg-Erft Regional Forestry Office. Up to 400 trees can be cut down a day, and around 8000 in the Schmelztal so far. "In total, we will probably have to remove 20,000 trees from the forest here, perhaps even more," estimates Schütte. That would be a loss of up to two thirds of the older spruce stands.

Cause of fire is still unclear: Locksmith's shop burnt out

SIEGBURG. In the early hours of Saturday morning 45 officers of the fire brigade were called out to a fire in a locksmith's shop in the Siegburger district of Zange. Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway. It was around 2.40 am on Saturday, when residents of Katharinenstraße in the Siegburg district of Zange were woken up by unusual noises. They noticed quickly that the crackling sound was caused by a fire in a commercially used building. The heat had led to the gas cylinders exploding loudly.

The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading to a 50 metre long flat extension of the locksmith's shop. Even the historic city villa, which is only a few metres away and is said to date from the turn of the century, remained undamaged as far as is known.

The extent of the material damage is currently unclear as is the cause of the fire. In the case of building fires, experts from the criminal investigation department are responsible for investigating the cause. The fire brigade was still busy with extinguishing work until the early hours of the morning.

Water damage and asbestos contamination: Kita in Bonn closed due to faulty refurbishment

RAMERSDORF. Due to water damage and remaining asbestos in the plastered surface, the Kita Weidenweg will not open until September 9. Parents are stunned and now have to take additional leave.

Since Friday, the parents of the girls and boys who attend the Weidenweg daycare center in Ramersdorf have been facing a major problem. This is because, as a letter to the parents shows, it will not be possible for them to open on Wednesday after a pollutant clean-up as planned.

Sabine Lukas, department head of the municipal day-care centres for children, explains in the two-page letter available to the GA that a company involved in the renovation work had "not done its job properly".
