GA English on Sunday News in brief from Bonn and the region

Bonn/Cologne · Although some adjustments have been made due to the weather, the Bonn Rose Monday Parade has been given the go ahead. Meanwhile, the Beethoven Hall renovations prove problematic and a young motorist races through Cologne past undercover police.

Bonn Rose Monday Parade gets go ahead

BONN. Director of the Bonn Rose Monday Parade has said to GA that he is now assuming the parade will start right on time at 12 noon. Late Sunday afternoon, all the responsible people from the Bonn Carnival Festival Committee met again to have meteorologist Karsten Brandt from Bonn explain the current weather forecast for Monday. Rain showers are possible from time to time and stormy winds are expected but it does not look hopeless. Wolf said that for safety reasons, they would adapt to the weather conditions by not having any horses in the parade, using cars instead. "Should further restrictions become necessary for the Rose Monday procession, we will announce this in due time on Monday morning," Wolf explained. Dark clouds loom over Beethoven Hall renovations

BONN. The problems with the renovation of the Beethoven Hall are more serious than previously thought. The city and its project controllers have apparently lost control of the building project at times. As a confidential analysis from Drees & Sommer (project controllers) shows, they suspect that some companies who were to be involved in the renovations have not even started their work. The crux of the matter seems to be the implementation plans for each individual project on the construction site. Because the city administration and council were determined to renovate the hall by the time Beethoven celebrated its anniversary in 2020, the plans were not yet complete when construction began at the end of 2016. According to the report, there was a lack of implementation planning for work on the façade, roof, dry construction and concrete floors, for example. The work is now expected to go on until at least 2022. Orig. text: Andreas Baumann Translation: Carol Kloeppel

25-year-old races through Cologne at 190 kph

COLOGNE. Late Friday evening, the "Race Project" unit of the Cologne police stopped a 25-year-old driver who had been speeding through Cologne-Niehl at speeds of up to 190 kilometers per hour. The officers confiscated the car and the man's driver's license and initiated criminal proceedings for the illegal motor vehicle race. At around 10pm, undercover police had noticed the white BMW on the Mülheimer bridge, where it drove with a roaring engine and extreme acceleration as it passed by the officers. Police were able to stop the speeder on Bremerhavener Strasse. Orig. text: ga.de Translation: Carol Kloeppel
