GA English on Sunday News in Brief from Bonn and the region

Bonn · Police get new colleagues, Bonn singer Makeda Michalke to attend the Eurovision Song Contest, 20 Bonn winners at the Maths Olympics in Bad Godesberg, and the Rhine still needs a lot of rain - here is our news briefs on Sunday.

Further growth expected: Number of policemen in Bonn increases

BONN. For the first time in more than 20 years, the number of police officers in the Bonn police department has increased - in all operational departments. According to Udo Schott, head of the Police Union (GdP), there are two reasons for this: On the one hand, the recruitment figures were gradually increased throughout the state to 2300 per year now, and on the other hand, 500 wage-scale employees were hired throughout North Rhine-Westphalia in order to relieve the burden on police officers. 15 of them now work for the Bonn Police Headquarters (PP). "But it's still a long way from being enough," says Schott. So far, there have been no signs of an increase in personnel on the streets. There is a simple explanation for this, says Schott. Because of the new working time regulations, new shift work models have had to be implemented. Among other things, there must now be at least eleven hours between different services. However, there is no doubt that this can only be achieved with additional personnel. (Original text: Ayla Jacob)

Among the top six: Bonn singer Makeda Michalke agrees to attend ESC

BONN. The Bonn singer Makeda has been invited to the ESC several times. She previously waved off the offer three times. This year she accepted the nomination - and is among the top six. One cannot deny persistence by those responsible for the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), at least in the case of Makeda Michalke. "They have approached me three times in the past years without me applying," says the young singer from Bonn and laughs. Makeda is one of six candidates who have already been chosen for "Unser Lied für Israel" and are fighting for a nomination for one of the most important international music competitions in the world. But Makeda is relaxed. At least still. "At the moment, everything is as it always is," says the 28-year-old, who is starting as a solo artist. "I'm on tour with my band Steal A Taxi, with whom I recorded a new album, and I live my life.“ In February it will be decided whether Makeda will be allowed to enter the international stage. At the latest then, as the Bonn woman knows, the nervousness should grow at least a little bit. (Original text: Thomas Kölsch)

Award ceremony in the Aloisiuskolleg: 20 Bonn winners at the Maths Olympics in Bad Godesberg

BAD GODESBERG. Logical thinking, ability to combine, and creative handling of, mathematical methods: This is what the Mathematics Olympiad is all about. On Friday evening the award ceremony took place in the Aloisiuskolleg (Ako). 88 first to third prizes and 71 recognitions were awarded. Thanks were also given to the teachers who had corrected almost 4000 solutions in the first two rounds. For Bonn, the association Mathe Pro, founded bymathsteachers in 2003, organizes the local competitions. The Aloisiuskolleg also named 20 Bonn pupils who qualified for the other competitions and will take part in the state competition in Düsseldorf on 23 February next year. There they will fight for the invitation to the national competition. Already in September, more than 1000 pupils tried their hand at 22 secondary schools in the first round of this year's Mathematics Olympiad. 300 qualified for the regional round. In mid-November, they spent three hours pondering over four tasks to find the best Bonn students in the field of mathematics. . The Mathematics Olympiad is an annual nationwide competition in which over 250,000 students take part. (Original text: Hannah Locks)

Low water in Bonn and the region: The Rhine still needs a lot of rain

BONN. The low water level in the Rhine continues to cause major problems in shipping traffic. Experts have now calculated how much rain there must be for the Rhine to return to a reasonably normal level. On Friday the Rhine level in Bonn was still only 90 centimetres. Shipping is severely restricted, with major economic consequences. So for the Rhine and the groundwater reservoirs to return to their pre-drought levels, it would have to rain almost twice as much in the first half of 2019 as in the rest of the year. "This is not out of the question," emphasises an expert. In 1947, for example, there was such an extreme precipitation phase - following an equally extreme dry phase. Frequently, however, this does not happen - the summer of the century 2018 could still have long after-effects. (Original text: Anna Maria Beekes)
