Spring is a problem for allergy sufferers Milder temperatures extend pollen season

BONN · Allergy sufferers will probably have to struggle for a bit longer this year. Experts partly blame climate change and new plant species for the longer allergy season.

Spring is a challenging time for many allergy sufferers. During these months, the effects of pollen dispersal become apparent. Very likely, it is not only the spring months that affect those who suffer. The pollen season lasts longer and longer due to the average temperatures becoming milder and milder.

According to the weather portal Wetter.com the pollen dispersal began already in winter, in December. Also in November, grasses and nettles triggered allergic reactions. Experts reason that the last twelve months were consistently too warm, causing these developments.

It is believed that climate change also contributes to the increase in hay fever symptoms. The higher carbon dioxide content in the air is said to increase the pollen production of many plants. "All in all, we expect a worsening of pollen allergies in Germany due to climate change and the extended vegetation period," explains Ulf Darsow, who works at the Clinic for Dermatology and Allergy in Munich.

Each allergy sufferer reacts differently to the pollen. People who are allergic to several different plants would have a longer period of suffering due to the longer pollen season. Experts see an extended pollen season because new plant species are being introduced.
