Today, the 30th of May is Ascension Day and this is a holiday in Germany. For those who take off Friday, the extended weekend is ideal for a short holiday and excursions in the region. The state roads authority of NRW expects a significant increase in traffic.

Traffic jams

The most and the longest traffic jams are expected to occur especially on routes leading towards the coasts, such as the A1, A31, A40, A57 and A61. Considerable delays can also be expected at times on the A3 in the greater Cologne area and in the Oberhausen area.

People are expected to return on Sunday, 2 June, around midday. At that time, the A3 in the Oberhausen-Cologne area, the A44 from Kassel to Dortmund and the A61 will be particularly affected.

Bottlenecks and construction sites

Construction sites on the A560 have been announced for the region. From Wednesday evening (29 May), 9 p.m. until Monday morning, 3 June, 5 a.m., a lane between the Siegburg junction and the Sankt Augustin-West triangle will be closed. Between the Hennef-Ost junction and the end of the A560, a special lane will be in effect until 10 July.

Construction sites on the A45 Lennetalbrücke and the A1 in the Volmarstein area (both directions) are expected to cause congestion and could lead to long traffic jams, especially on busy days.

In addition, there is a risk of congestion on the following routes:

A43 in the Bochum-Recklinghausen area

A44 in the area of Werl

A33 in the Paderborn area

Autobahns across Germany with potential for congestion:

A2: Berlin - Hanover - Dortmund

A4: Kirchheimer triangle - Erfurt - Chemnitz - Dresden

A5: Hattenbacher Triangle - Darmstadt - Karlsruhe - Basel

A6: Kaiserslautern - Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg

A7: Flensburg - Hamburg - Hanover - Würzburg - Füssen/Reutte

A8: Karlsruhe - Stuttgart - Munich - Salzburg

A9: Munich - Nuremberg - Berlin

A10: Berlin Ring

A93: Inntal triangle - Kufstein

A99: Munich bypass

A look at neighboring countries

Ascension Day is also a legal holiday in the Benelux countries. Because of that, Roermond, Eindhoven and Venlo are also expected to experience increased traffic.

Roermond:

Those traveling to Roermond from the Cologne/Bonn area should use the A4 in the direction of Aachen and then the A76 (NL) and A2 (NL) in the direction of Eindhoven.

Eindhoven:

Those traveling to Eindhoven from the Cologne/Bonn area should take the A61 in the direction of Venlo from the Kerpen motorway junction and then the A74 (NL), A73 (NL) and A67 (NL) to Eindhoven.

Venlo:

Traveling from the Cologne/Bonn area with Venlo as your destination, take the A61 in the direction of Venlo and then the A74 (NL) and A73 (NL) as far as exit 16 "Venlo-Zuid".
