Bonn · The public prosecutor’s office is now investigating after an accident at Bonn police’s shooting range on Monday evening. A shot was fired on the way to training and hit a 23-year-old officer in the neck. Investigators are assuming misconduct by a colleague.

A serious accident occurred in the basement wing of the Bonn police headquarters late on Monday afternoon. According to Cologne police, two policemen were on their way from the changing room to an emergency training course at the shooting range around 4.50pm when a shot was fired from one of the service weapons and hit the 23-year-old officer in the neck. He was critically injured. According to the current state of investigations, the police are assuming misconduct by a 22-year-old colleague.

The police were carrying their service weapons as well as the so-called “red weapons”. “Red weapons” are non-functional pistols identical in design to service weapons that are used by officers in deployment training.

The public prosecutor’s office and Cologne police reported that hospital doctors treating the shot 23-year-old said on Monday evening that he was no longer in danger of dying. The policeman underwent an emergency operation in the University Hospital and will continue to be treated there in intensive care. The 23-year-old cannot be interviewed yet.

Cologne police sent a nine person investigation team to Bonn. For reasons of neutrality, the investigations were handed over to Cologne police. They are now questioning witnesses at police headquarters and investigating at the hospital.
