Counter demonstration registered Identitarian movement to demonstrate in Bonn on Sunday

Bonn · The Identitarian movement will hold a demonstration in the former government district on Sunday. At the same time, a counter-demo of the alliance "Bonn stellt sich quer" has been announced.

The planned United Nations Migration Pact has triggered two demonstrations that will both be held on Sunday, November 18, in the former government district. Under the motto "Stop Migration Pact", the Identitarian movement called for a rally on United Nations Square in front of the UN campus from 2 p.m. onwards. At the same time, a counter-demonstration of the alliance "Bonn stellt sich quer" has been registered nearby. On it’s website, the Bonn alliance "Bonn stellt sich quer" declares that there is “no voice, no place in Bonn for Nazis and racists with their dehumanizing hate slogans.” The police confirmed the registration of the demonstrations and said that they expected them to proceed peacefully.

For some time now, the Identitarian Movement in Europe has been mobilizing against migration policy with various initiatives and flash mobs; the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified it as a right-wing extremist organization and put it under surveillance in 2016. The alliance "Bonn stellt sich quer" accuses the Identitarians of a racist worldview. The call for a counter-demonstration was joined by the Left party in the city council, among others.

The UN Migration Pact and its binding powers are currently the subject of controversial debate. A number of states, including the USA and Austria, have announced that they will not sign the agreement; others are calling for improvements. The German Federal Government, on the other hand, wants to sign in December. The AfD party and federal politicians from the ranks of the CDU and CSU have criticized the agreement.
