Rheinaue Park Hot air balloon fest this weekend

BONN · This weekend, you will be able to enjoy a great view when 25 hot air balloon teams fly over the skies of Bonn and the surrounding area.

On Monday, our GA photographer was invited along with a few others to get a glimpse of a test flight for the press. Three hot air balloons started out from the Rheinaue and flew over Bad Godesberg and Wachtberg - past the dome of the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Frequency Physics and Radar Technology FHR, which can be seen here below the balloon basket - and into the Ahr valley.

Participants of the hot air balloon festival this weekend will also take the same route. From Friday through Sunday, they take to the air each day at 6:30 pm and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, early at 6:30 am as well.

While the prospects for fantastic views are definitely there for the balloon teams, there is also the chance of some bad weather as thunderstorms are possible. This means the starting times for the balloon lifts are subject to change.

Interested Bonn residents are allowed to sign up to ride along on one of the balloons. A family festival will also take place in conjunction with the balloon fest on Saturday beginning at 3pm and on Sunday starting at 12 noon. On Saturday evening, the balloons will glow in the dark as the lighted aircraft leave the Rheinaue Park beginning at 10:30pm.
