BSI to receive more competencies : Horst Seehofer visits Bonn after data theft

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer visited the data protection authority BSI in Bonn on Monday. He promised the Federal Office more competences - for example in dealing with platforms such as Facebook.

After the mass theft of politician and celebrity data, Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) has promised the data protection authority BSI more competence - for example in dealing with platforms such as Facebook. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), he said, needed an "obligation option" for the providers to delete content there. "This is very important to me. I don't want the BSI to have to act as petitioner in such a case vis-à-vis Facebook and others," said Seehofer on Monday during a visit to the BSI in Bonn.

In December, a hacker published new data daily on Twitter from politicians, journalists, rappers, YouTube stars and other celebrities. A student from Homberg (Ohm) in Hesse was arrested in January and confessed to the crime. BSI President Arne Schönbohm, however, had been sharply criticised by the SPD, the Green Party and the Left Party for his actions in the scandal.

Seehofer, on the other hand, attested that the authority under his authority acted very quickly and well. "All of this was perfect, he said. (dpa)
