Face masks compulsory from Monday Here is where you can still get masks in Bonn

Bonn · For some time they were considered a scarce commodity but now so-called “makeshift” masks are available almost everywhere. This comes just at the right time because starting on Monday, April 29, there is an obligation to wear a mask in many places in Bonn.

Beginning on Monday in Bonn, face masks must be worn on buses, trams and trains, and while out shopping. GA lists some places where you can get face masks in Bonn.

As traditional distributors of protective masks, most of the city's pharmacies have stocked up on their inventory. The cheapest face mask offered is the classic light blue or green surgical masks, which adapt to the shape of the face when unfolded. You can get these, for example, at the “Münster Apotheke” in Bonn, at the “Apotheke zur Alten Post” in Beuel or at the “Apotheke am Römerplatz” in Bad Godesberg for under two euros a piece. Most pharmacies also offer so-called "filtering half masks" for around ten euros. "A mask with protection class FFP2 offers sufficient self-protection for eight hours," says Rachid El Absi from the “Apotheke in Auerberg Mitte”. Provided it does not have a valve, it can even be heated once or twice in the oven and reused. The round filter masks FFP2 and FFP3 are usually available without a valve and are already adapted to the shape of the face.

Demand remains high

The demand for respiratory protection has increased due to the current situation, and this has prompted other suppliers of medical merchandise to offer them as well. One of them is the “Sanitätshaus Eiken” in Bad Godesberg. The demand for simple everyday face masks remains high.

The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices distinguishes between three types of masks. Besides the so-called "community mask" there are medical mouth and nose protectors that are familiar from hospital use. Both do not protect the wearer of the mask, but they protect others from droplets that could potentially be spread by the wearer. Only the filtering half-masks FFP2 and FFP3, which are used, for example, by people with previous illnesses, offer sufficient protection against infection with CoVid-19.

The new regulation on the wearing of a face mask does not specify the filtering requirements of the material. In light of the supply shortages a few weeks ago and the fact that a large proportion of medical protective masks come from Asia, numerous companies, associations and individuals in Bonn have taken it upon themselves to produce or order required masks themselves and pass them on free of charge.

Like many tailor shops in the city, the Isik alterations shop in Oberkassel offers black double-fabric cotton masks for seven euros. The parquet company Mielke plans to distribute masks free of charge this Saturday: From 9 a.m. to 12 noon, the company will be handing out around 500 face masks from the Meckenheim print shop DCM at a stand on Pützstraße, not far from the Sparkasse. The Brandt print shop on Rathausgasse will offer face visors. The creative workshop "MakerSpace" on Kennedyallee will do the same.

Instead of creating costumes, costume designer Tom Haass and his team are currently sewing 2,500 colorful masks every week in his atelier. The design company offers a colorful range of fabrics with different patterns to choose from. Starting at 100 units, these "designer masks" can be purchased for five euros each.

The art and cultural association "KuKuG" is also sewing masks instead of costumes due to a cancelled part of the Beethoven Festival and gives them away for a donation. The “Haus der Familie” in Plittersorf also offers masks for sale.
