Bonn city center Green island to be installed on Münsterplatz

Bonn · The "1000 Green Islands" project aims to improve the quality of life by planning, building and maintaining mobile green islands in public spaces. From May 11 to August 30, a green island will enhance Münsterplatz in Bonn.

Densely populated cities are often gray and monotonous. In order to change this in Bonn, the student working group AG Grüne Infrastruktur (Green Infrastructure) had an idea, which it will implement together with the Science Shop (WILA) Bonn and the City of Bonn: The "1000 Green Islands" project aims to improve the quality of life by planning, building and maintaining mobile green islands in public spaces. Such a green island will be realized this weekend near the Beethoven monument on Münsterplatz. Featuring seating, climbing plants, fragrant herbs and flowering shrubs, it will remain until August 30.

According to the organizers, the aim of the project is to draw attention to the issues of climate protection, climate change adaptation, biodiversity and sustainability in the city, especially where there are sealed surfaces. A total of 20 green islands are to be set up in Bonn this year. Local sponsors will take care of the maintenance. Planned for the islands are seating areas made from wood, with many native plants that adapt to the climate and provide food for bees. The islands are also intended to arouse the curiosity of citizens and to explain what green spaces do for nature and the climate in the city.

The opening of the project "1000 Green Islands" will take place this coming Saturday in the Alte VHS, Kasernenstraße 50. During the event, the green island for Münsterplatz will also be constructed and plantings completed during a workshop from 10 am until 1 pm. Those who would like to take part, can register by E-Mail to andrea.boettcher@wilabonn.de. The island will be put into place at Münsterplatz from 1pm to 3pm.

According to the organizers, green spaces are important for several reasons: In summer, they cool overheated cities, clean the air and provide a habitat for plants and animals. They can also be used as places to meet and relax.
