Kurfürstenbad Godesberg group rejects proposals for alternate use

BAD GODESBERG · The citizen group Bürger.Bad.Godesberg does not want to see a market hall or a meeting place where the indoor swimming pool used to operate. What will happen to the indoor swimming pool remains unclear.

Although the Kurfürstenbad indoor swimming pool in Bad Godesberg has been closed for some time now, it hasn’t been forgotten. The Bad Godesberg district council had to consider a weighty question from the CDU party at its meeting on Wednesday evening.

The topic: possible uses of the building which houses the pool - which is situated near the music school. Background: Both the council coalition and the administration do not want to reopen the pool - which echoes the results of the first citizen's referendum. The majority of the citizens of Bonn voted in favor of closing the indoor pool.

The suggestions of the CDU in Bad Godesberg have now put the Bürger.Bad.Godesberg in a position of having to respond. The members of the group said they did not want to see a market hall in the building, nor a place for associations or groups to meet. "We want a pool to be preserved at this point - regardless of whether it's completely renovated or new," stressed Joachim Schäfer, chairman of the group.

The idea of installing a combination pool in Friesdorf is not an alternative. This is only a few hundred meters away from Dottendorf. With that location, it is just as inconvenient for Bad Godesberg residents as the Wasserland Pool, which was shot down in a citizen referendum as well.

The CDU proposals for the Kurfürstenbad also went "exactly in the wrong direction, because they divert attention away from the pool". A market hall in that location competes with Moltkeplatz and clubs gathering at the pool building would weaken the Stadthalle as a venue.

To emphasize their stance, members of the group stood with blue lanterns, signs, and a television with pictures from the old pool as they awaited the district council members. Orig. text: Ayla Jacob Translation: Carol Kloeppel
