Lukas Podolski : German football star opens ice cream shop in Bonn

Lukas Podolski has long been more than a footballer: In Cologne he runs two ice cream cafés called Ice Cream United and a snack bar, Mangal Döner. He will soon be opening another ice cream shop on Poststrasse in Bonn. But will he make it to the opening?

The ball is round, and so is the scoop of ice-cream. Perhaps this explains why a soccer player like Lukas Podolski (33) has become the proud owner of ice cream parlors. Now the people of Bonn can also enjoy Poldi ice cream. The former star of 1. FC Cologne plans to open a branch of "Ice Cream United" in Bonn's city center on Ascension Day next Thursday.

Podolski has already opened two ice cream shops in Cologne - one in the Belgian Quarter and one at Heumarkt. His third ice cream parlor is now being set up on Poststrasse in a former telephone store right next to the Cassius Bastion. The craftsmen are busy there getting the space ready for business.

The counter with the dividers for the ice cream varieties is already there, on the wall hangs a price board with an image of Podolski and the slogan for his ice cream parlors: "Give me the ball". The opening is scheduled for Thursday, 30 May, at 11 am. But this is "depending on how we progress," Podolski's partner Christian Gaier told the GA. Gaier's family successfully started ice cream production in the USA in 1901.

The question as to whether the 2014 World Champion, who also runs a kebab snack bar in Cologne, will be personally present at the opening in Bonn had to be answered by Gaier with a “no”: The footballer is not coming, he has to work in Japan. He has been under contract with the Japanese club Vissel Kobe since mid-2017. Previously he played for Bayern Munich and Galatasaray Istanbul, among others.
