Bad Godesberg inner city Fronhofer Galeria parking garage opens again

BAD GODESBERG · After many months of closure, the underground parking garage at Fronhofer Galeria has finally re-opened. It had been closed for repairs following flash flooding.

Many Bad Godesberg residents had been waiting for this news for some time. Not only that the Fronhofer Galeria officially re-opened on Friday, but also the underground parking garage. On June 4, around four million liters of water rushed into the Galeria and parking garage as a result of flash floods.

A total of 7,000 square meters was affected. Uncertainty about when the shopping mall would re-open caused some businesses to leave, Benetton and “Mi parti.” Two stores have replaced those, “P3 Fashion” and “Fashion Room.” Galeria center manager Anke Opfermann could not say how the parking garage would be protected from such serious flooding in the future. She would only say, “An expert is working on the subject of flood protection for the car park.”

Among other things, the fire proof doors in the basement did not withstand the water pressure, the masonry was slanting or completely broken down, ventilation, electronics and other technical facilities were destroyed. “It’s a great day for Bad Godesberg,” said Simone Stein-Lücke, the district mayor. Jürgen Bruder, head of city marketing, noted that the complete re-opening of the Galeria was good for the other businesses in the area as well.

Opfermann could not say when the remaining empty spaces in the Galeria would be rented. “There are some plans but I cannot say anything about them yet.” (Orig. text: Ayla Jacob)
